These are sources that not only guided my research but also intended to live on this website past its current mock-up state.

The Lost World of Old Europe: The Danube Valley, 5000–3500 bc David W. Anthony & Jennifer Y. ChiThis served as the basis for my research on this topic and offers a lot of introductory information as well as documentation of specific studies that begin to deepen one’s knowledge. Select articles from this book would be featured in a final website to supplement the “books section.”resource library > books

History of Religious Ideas, Volume 1: From the Stone Age to the Eleusinian Mysteries Mircea Eliade
(English & Romanian versions used)
This book has a chapter of it featured in the current website format. Eliade’s ideas give context to how the neolithic people of Romania might have understood their surroundings + developed culture, potentially aiding in synthesizing other sources about these societies’ material culture.resource library > books

Anthropomorphic Representations in the Cucuteni-Tripolye Culture Dan MonahThis book offers more context into the captivating figurines that characterize these neolithic groups’ material culture + that remain mysterious to this day. I would use this to place/label artifacts in the artifact gallery as well as pull some chapters from it to explain the overarching history of these figurines & how unique they are.resource library > books

Deciphering the Vinca Script Toby D. Griffen
A key point of this thesis is that neolithic Eastern Europe/Romanian cultures didn’t become known to us until much later than Mesopotamia is due to a lack of a written language. However, this did not mean these people didn’t use symbols as a form of pre-literate communication. This source offers a rare look into these symbols — symbols that are still present in Romanian iconography today.

I would use this in the website in a separate section about semiotics + the modern-day effects of neolithic societies to inform users about their ever-relevance.

SOVIET ARCHAEOLOGY IN THEORY AND PRACTICE Marcus Bajema

This source detailing a lapse in archaeology in Eastern Bloc countries + a staggering lack of Eastern European archaeologists’ work circulating to this day was one of the main inspirations for this project. This lack of knowledge about Neolithic Europe that comes as a result of censorship + isolationism begins to explain a lack of colloquial knowledge & framed my approach to this thesis.resource library > articles
